Passport Medical president Mark Semple was one of the keynote speakers at the recent Medical Travel International Business Summit hosted in San Jose and Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The conference was sponsored by ProMed. The conference took place from May 2-5, 2011 and featured numerous buyers of healthcare from The United States and Canada including a number of insurance representatives. In addition, medical providers and healthcare clusters from Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Argentina, and other countries were well represented at the conference.
Mr. Semple spoke to a large audience on the topic of New Markets In Medical Tourism. Passport Medical was prominently featured at this conference as it has sent over 500 patients to Costa Rica in the last year alone. Costa Rica is a prominent player in medical tourism as it has a highly regarded medical system at prices often 50-70% less than the United States.
Medical tourism, dental tourism, fertility tourism, and other health travel is expanding rapidly and is projected to be a 100 billion dollar industry in the next few years. The industry is being driven by the extremely high costs of healthcare in countries like The United States and long wait times in countries like Canada. It is for this reason that many insurance providers are beginning to offer medical tourism policies to their members and the reason many attended the recent conference.
